Episode 8 - Line Drives and Data Drives
In this episode, we talk data science. A first-year student explains how he’s sharing baseball statistics online and connecting with other sports-starved fans while the COVID-19 pandemic puts organized sports on hold. We also highlight the Integrative Data Science Initiative.
In this episode of This Is Purdue, we talk data science. Data is essential to how we learn, communicate, and innovate, and it’s especially important in sports. Jeremy Frank, a highly enterprising computer science major, is fascinated by baseball statistics. In high school, he created the Twitter account “@MLBRandomStats,” and co-authored a book titled “Hidden Ball Trick: The Baseball Stats You Never Thought to Look for From 1876 to 1919.”
Recently, as a first-year Purdue student, Jeremy’s passion for stats inspired a YouTube channel titled “Baseball Interview Series.” The channel is a place where sports-starved fans can connect while the COVID-19 pandemic puts organized sports on hold.
In Part 2, we highlight Purdue’s Integrative Data Science Initiative, a program that allows students across all disciplines to explore and finetune their skills in data science research, ethics and education. We talk about what “big data” is and why it’s important.
